ATLANTA, GA — A towering new 35-foot sculpture commissioned by Atlanta's Public Arts Program pays tribute to Cleopas Redwood Johnson Jr., the late director of the Morris Brown College Band. Johnson is recognized for breaking barriers that enabled the band from a historically black college to perform at events where no such band had performed before.

The sculpture stands at the front end of Cleopas R. Johnson Park — which had previously been named in honor of the director — in Atlanta's historic Castleberry Hill Arts District located at the corner of Fair Street and Northside Drive. The sculpture was officially dedicated as a part of the City of Atlanta's public art program in December 2009.

Titled "The Horn Section," the monumental sculpture is constructed of galvanized steel and eight-ton granite boulders. Its suspended trumpets bring to mind the dynamic stance of a horn player and create a highly visible portal for the southwestern district of Atlanta.

The artwork is one of six public structures commissioned by The City of Atlanta's Public Art Program and was financed through the Opportunity Bond's percent-for-art capitol project. Arts program officials anticipate that "The Horn Section" will engage the culturally diverse and historic Southwest Atlanta neighborhoods in a magnificent way.

The Office of Cultural Affairs was established in 1974 to encourage and support Atlanta's cultural resources. The initial mission was to solidify the role that arts and other cultural resources play in defining and enhancing the social fabric and quality of life of Atlanta citizens and visitors. Today the OCA is working to enhance Atlanta's reputation as a cultural destination.
