Calgary Stampede Parade to highlight Royal Couple's tour of Alberta


The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Catherine CALGARY (June 21, 2011) — Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will visit the province of Alberta from July 6 to 8. The stop in Alberta will be highlighted by their participation in the annual Calgary Stampede Parade on Friday, July 8. The itinerary includes a number of events that will emphasize the province's traditions, institutions and technological achievements.

"Albertans are delighted that Their Royal Highnesses will be travelling to our province during their first international tour as a married couple," said Premier Ed Stelmach. "The Royal Tour will showcase some great examples of our cultural heritage and ingenuity and it is my sincere hope that the visit will help build a lasting relationship between Their Royal Highnesses and the people of Alberta."

Following is an overview of the official itinerary:

Thursday, July 7

The visit to Alberta officially begins in the afternoon of July 7 when Their Royal Highnesses will be greeted on their arrival by the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, the Honourable Donald Ethell, Premier Stelmach and their spouses.

Their Royal Highnesses will then depart for a private tour of the University of Calgary's Ward of the 21st Century Research and Innovation Centre. In the evening, the Royal Couple will attend a reception hosted by the Government of Canada.

Friday, July 8

Calgary Stampede logo The public is invited to see Their Royal Highnesses in the morning as they travel the route of the Calgary Stampede Parade just prior to the start of the parade. The Royal Couple will then launch a fireworks display signaling the start of the annual parade. Later that morning, Their Royal Highnesses will attend a reception hosted by the Government of Alberta.

The visit concludes in the afternoon when the public is invited to Calgary Rotary Challenger Park for military honours and the Royal Couple's official farewell to Alberta and Canada.
