Opinion: Don't let fake news harm the marching activity

Social media is being flooded this week with variations of a news story that "no high school bands from Washington, D.C., applied to march in the upcoming Inaugural parade."

Fact-checking website Snopes.com rated a recent thread of misleading stories about Washington, D.C., marching bands and the 2017 Inaugural parade as mostly false. Even though that statement may be true, it is misleading. There are very few active high school marching bands in Washington, D.C.

Number of high school bands from Washington, D.C., that marched in the 2016 National Independence Day Parade: 0.

Number of high school bands from Washington, D.C., that marched in the 2016 National Memorial Day Parade: 0.

Number of high school bands from Washington, D.C., that marched in the 2013 Inaugural Parade: 1.

Several writers and websites have latched on to the original story and posted sensational, irresponsible and inaccurate variations. This thread of stories has even been picked up by fact-checking website Snopes.com, which rates the information "mostly false."

In short, we encourage our readers to avoid propagating misleading stories that tear down school music programs.
